Quality pictures and complete information are essential for a quality catalog. I spend easily 40 hrs creating the catalog for you for free. Please help me make the process as smooth as possible.
I want your quilts to look fabulous in the catalog. Here are some tips for great pictures of your quilts and help me keep my sanity ….
I review every photo and almost always use Photoshop to crop, improve the lighting, remove background, color correct, etc. which takes much time (think >100 pictures, each takes 5-120 minutes to “clean up”, so that alone takes me 500 to 1200 minutes just to prep photos to place in the catalog, let alone type in the info, format, proof read, and review catalog proofs, create the cover, and deal with Amazon)

Tips for Photographing your quilt
- Please, please vacuum or use a lint brush on your pieces before you photograph. Every year I have to electronically “clean off” stray threads, pins, and animal hair off your photos. It’s a shame to see threads and lint on beautiful quilts. It just looks unprofessional. Would you enter Houston or Visions with crap stuck to your quilt?
- Take your photos in natural, filtered light or shade, preferably not under artificial light, and at a high resolution (at least a 2-3 MB photo). I would like jpg format.
- Place your quilt on a white or off white smooth background that has no texture (unless your quilt is very light, then put it on a dark smooth background). Do not photograph on concrete, wood, tile, or a very textured wall lor background. White flannel or a white sheet is best.
- Make sure your quilt is not distorted in the photo. This happens if your camera/phone are not completely level and parallel to your quilt. A slight tilt one way or another makes a squared-up quilt look out of square. Please check your photos before you send to me. The sides should be parallel and square. Distortion comes from holding your camera crooked and not being centered on your quilt (not level, slightly tipped, etc) (Hold your camera straight up and down, level, and centered on the center of the quilt)
- Check the color in the photo. It needs to be true. If not, try taking the photo in a different location or indoors. You want to avoid shadows.
- If you are covering a piece with glass, please photograph it before you put it under glass. Its almost impossible to remove glare.
Sending me your photos & information
- Please name each quilt photo file with your LAST name and the title of the quilt in the following manner: Last name_QuiltTitle. For example: Jurss_Pomegranate. If that is not possible, send me one quilt picture per email as an enclosure along with the name of it in the email.
- Please enclose the photo in an email. Do not drag it into the body of the email. Please do not text photos to me.
- Also send me the same info you are sending Christina for labels
- Title
- Quilt dimensions in inches. W x H
- One to two sentence statement you want included in the catalog. No formatting is necessary. Please do not bold, italicize, underline, or use a font other than black. You can talk about your inspiration, the meaningful background story for the piece, your techniques and/or materials used.
- No need to include your name on the label information
Here’s a sample of the information for each quilt in the email you include the picture. Black font only, no special formatting.
